  1. Isolate the battery and drain the exhaust manifold and elbow cooling passages before loosening any exhaust hardware or hose connections.
  2. Keep the manifold-to-cylinder-head gasket (reference 3853412) and the manifold-to-elbow riser gasket (reference 857618) separate, and compare each part against the removed components and casting passages.
  3. Clean and inspect all manifold and elbow sealing surfaces and hose spigots for scale, pitting or distortion before assembling the new gaskets, drain plugs with O-rings, or exhaust hose according to the engine service manual.
