Which pump is this?

This is the smaller 3-nipple external-pulse mechanical fuel pump for Johnson / Evinrude 2-stroke twins in the 18–35 HP class. OEM 0438555 (438555) with predecessor 433386 / 0433386. Compatible with the six HP groups in the table: 18 HP (including some J25JR commercial-badged 18 HP), 20 HP 1990–1999, 25 HP 1990–2005, 28 HP 1990–1996, 30 HP 1990–2005, and 2-cylinder 35 HP 1990–1996. Three nipples: fuel in, fuel out, crankcase pulse. It is not the larger 438559 body and not a 2-port 438556 pump.

Signs yours is due

• 18–30 HP Johnson / Evinrude 2-stroke cranks, fires, then dies unless you keep squeezing the bulb — this small 3-port pump is the usual wear item on 1990s twins.
• Fuel leak at a nipple or a hairline crack in the pump cover after winter storage.
• You already replaced the bulb and the tank pickup; the engine still will not stay running at idle on muffs.
• Not cooling: weak pee stream is the water pump in the lower unit.

Will it fit?

Compatible with Johnson / Evinrude 18 / 20 / 25 / 28 / 30 / 35 HP 2-stroke groups in the table, roughly 1990–2005 depending on HP. Catalogs often skip serial ranges. 25 HP is the trap: some 25 HP use this 438555 pump, others use 438559. Compare the old pump body and the stamp. 35 HP here is the 2-cylinder 1990–96 band only, not every 35 HP ever built.

Engine horsepower alone does not prove fit. Match the number stamped on the pump you remove to the OEM column.

Often replaced together

If the stamp is 438559, use 17FP009. Primer bulbs and fuel-filter elements are sold separately. This is not a 26FFK pump-plus-filter kit.

Install

On these 18–35 HP twins the pump is small and the three hoses sit close together. Label pulse vs fuel before you pull them. Remove two screws, clean the pad, and fit a new gasket with the pulse hole open. Do not swap this body onto a motor whose old pump was 438559 — the bracket may line up and the engine will still starve. Prime the bulb, check for weeps at each barb, idle on muffs, then a short lake test.

Will this fit my 25 HP Evinrude?

Only if your 25 HP row is in this table and the old pump is 438555. Many 25 HP motors use 438559 instead. Read the stamp and compare nipple size.

Three nipples but my motor is 70 HP?

No. Mechanical pump. Old June drafts titled it as a filter cartridge — that was a template error.
