Which pump is this?

This is a complete mechanical fuel-pump assembly for Johnson / Evinrude 2-stroke outboards that use the 438559 / 0438559 family — typically a 3-nipple external-pulse pump (inlet, outlet, crankcase pulse). Current BRP-style number is 0438559 (written 438559 without the leading zero). Service / package number 0765591 (765591) is the same pump in a different bag. The table also lists the long predecessor chain (381600 through 433390 and related). Compatible with the Johnson / Evinrude HP groups in the fitment table (examples include 6 / 8 HP 1987 rows, 25 / 35 HP mid-1990s commercial, and older 50–100+ HP groups). It is not an electric pump and not an inline fuel-filter cartridge.

Signs yours is due

• Big 2-stroke Johnson / Evinrude surges or starves at cruise; squeezing the bulb keeps it alive — external-pulse pump valves are lazy.
• Fuel spray from a nipple or a cracked plastic body on a 3-port pump mounted on the block / cowl area.
• On V4 / V6 motors that run two pumps: one bank goes lean. Count nipples and read 438559 vs 438557 (the other pump position) vs 438555 (the small 18–35 HP pump).
• Not VRO oiling failure alone — if the oil line is empty but fuel flow is strong, look at the oil pump, not this fuel pump.

Will it fit?

Compatible with Johnson / Evinrude 2-stroke HP groups in the table. Years run from late-1960s blocks through 1990s commercial 25 / 35 HP. The catalog often groups by horsepower name with long model lists (BE25, E6R, 70 HP 1974–1983, and so on) and does not always give serial ranges. Match 438559 / 0438559 on the pump you remove. Horsepower alone is not enough: 25 HP can be this pump or the smaller 438555 depending on year and pulse style.

Engine horsepower alone does not prove fit. Match the number stamped on the pump you remove to the OEM column.

• NOT 438555 / 0438555 — smaller 3-nipple pump for 18–35 HP 1990s (this site’s 17FP010). Different body.
• NOT 438556 / 18-7352 family — 2-port block-pulse pump (17FP015 neighbor). Folder names that still say 18-7352 for 17FP009 are outdated.
• NOT 438557 — the other pump position on some 40–235 HP twins. Same picture, different location.

One complete mechanical fuel-pump assembly. Gasket ships only if it is part of this pump’s photo set. No hose, no VRO oil pump, no rebuild kit.

Often replaced together

If your stamp is 438555, use the 17FP010 page (smaller 18–35 HP pump), not this one. Diaphragm repair kits are a different SKU. VRO oil pumps are not included.

Install

Photograph every hose on the three nipples before disconnecting — inlet, outlet, and pulse look alike when they are old and grey. Clamp fuel. Remove the two mounting screws. Compare the new body to the old one: nipple count, nipple size, and pulse location must match. A 2-port pump will physically bolt on some brackets and still be wrong. Fit a new flange gasket; do not block the pulse hole. Route hoses to the same barbs. Prime, leak-check, then run. On dual-pump V4 / V6, label port / starboard before you mix the old parts.

No. 18-7352 tracks the 438556 2-port family (neighbor 17FP015). This page is 438559 / 0438559. Confirm the OEM stamp, not the old folder title.

Will this fit my 25 HP Johnson?

Some 25 HP rows are on this 438559 table; other 25 HP 1990s motors use 438555 (17FP010). Count nipples and read the stamp. Horsepower is not enough.

Is 0765591 the same?

0765591 / 765591 is the service / package number for the same 0438559 pump. If that is what is printed on your bag or invoice, you are in the right family — still match the physical pump.

Electric fuel pump?

No. Mechanical external-pulse pump. Old drafts that said “electrical” for 388268 were describing the wrong part family.
